While the original Star Wars movie has cemented its place in filmmaking history, The Empire Strikes Back not only met the quality of the original; it surpassed it! In my opinion, The Empire Strikes Back is the best installment of the Star Wars franchise for a variety of reasons.

The musical score of the film is more intriguing, as it focuses on the situations and roles of the characters as well as the tempo of the film. There are many memorable characters in the film. From small, old and powerful Yoda to menacing, large and ruthless Darth Vader; from smooth-talking Lando Calrissian to my favorite duo of all time, C-3PO and R2-D2.

The film, as far as I’m aware, can be considered an epic. Even though those films are generally set in religion/mythology (The Ten Commandments, Troy) or historical (Lawrence of Arabia) an epic film is a film of large and grand scale. The Empire Strikes Back fits this explanation with its grandiose planets, awesome biomes, and high stakes.

The Empire Strikes Back also has a plot twist regarded by many as one of the greatest (if not, the greatest) of all time. Audiences are left in utter shock by the end credits and to those who wish to see it, I will not spoil (however, if you don’t already know, then you’ve been living under a rock for all your life so far).
